Pulivendula is not YSR Adda.
The TDP created history by defeating the YSR Congress Party for the first time in the Pulivendula ZP elections. This was a big setback for YSRCP chief Jaganmohan Reddy. His candidate lost miserably in the very constituency he himself represents. In the by-election held on the 12th of this month, TDP candidate Mereddy Latha Reddy won with a huge majority of 6,033 votes, while YSRCP candidate Hemanth Reddy secured only 683 votes and lost his deposit.
Although many consider Pulivendula to be a political stronghold of the YSR family, senior Congress leader Narreddy Tulasi Reddy says that is not the case. A resident of Kadapa district, he recalled that the family had lost many times when there was strong competition.
In the 1970 elections, YSR's parents Jayamma and Rajasekhara Reddy's father — both contested as ward members and lost. In 1984, TDP candidate D. Narayana Reddy won as MP by a margin of 3,500 votes. In the 1994 assembly elections, the TDP won 7 out of 11 seats in Kadapa district, while the Congress won only 4 seats. In 1995, the TDP won 3 out of 4 ZPTC seats in Pulivendula, and only one seat went to the Rajasekhara Reddy family. At that time, Tulasi Reddy was the TDP in-charge of Kadapa district. The TDP also won the MMPs of Vempalle and Vemula.
In 1996, Rajasekhara Reddy won as MP by a margin of just 4,000 votes. In 2017, TDP candidate B. Tech Ravi defeated YS Vivekananda Reddy in the local body MLC elections. In 2023, TDP's Ramagopal Reddy won the West Rayalaseema MLC elections.
YSR Congress did not contest 7 society seats in the Pulivendula Water Society elections in 2024. According to Tulasi Reddy, even though YSR Congress is a strong party in Kadapa, it is not invincible. When in power, it wins with money and strength, but if it faces a strong opposition, victory is not guaranteed, he commented.
