Mani Ratnam is the name that has taught the Indian film world a new trend. Mani Ratnam's films are never bloodthirsty or melodrama-heavy. But there are emotions that touch the heart of the audience. He has the power to take feelings to the peak, even if not in words, through cinematic language. He is an expert in expressing feelings through frames rather than dialogues. Every shot in his films is like a painting. The use of colors, the play of light and shadow, and the camera angles all take shape according to the story.

Mani Ratnam turned director in 1983 with the Kannada film 'Pallavi Anupallavi'. But his first film was a flop. After that, he directed a film called 'Unaru' with Mohanlal in Malayalam. That was a flop. Thus, the film 'Mounaragam' came after four consecutive flops. Mani Ratnam unveiled a new love story in 'Mounaragam' that the Tamil film audience had not seen until then.

Starting from ‘Mounaragam’ in 1986, ‘Nayakudu, Koladi, Geetanjali, Anjali, Thalapathy, Roja’ have achieved more than one success. Not only rewards, but these films have won awards at the national and international levels. Now, there is no filmmaker who has not been inspired by Mani Ratnam’s direction. Many aspiring directors have entered the film industry taking Mani Ratnam as their inspiration.

Among the senior most directors of South India, Mani Ratnam’s name should be mentioned first. After the ‘Ponniyen Selvan’ series, now Mani Ratnam is coming up with the film ‘Thug Life’. This is the first film made in the Kamal-Mani combination after ‘Nayakudu’. Today (June 2) is Mani Ratnam’s birthday. On this occasion, Telugu 70MM wishes legendary director Mani Ratnam a happy birthday.
