The under-construction Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district has been officially named "Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport (ASRIA)". The construction of the airport is progressing at a fast pace, with 84% of the work being completed in the first phase. According to officials, it is expected to be operational by June 2026.

This greenfield airport is being built by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited. In the initial phase, it will be able to handle around 60 lakh passengers per year. In the second phase, another runway will be built. The total capacity is planned to be increased to 4 crore passengers in the final phase.

The project was launched in 2015 by the then Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. At an estimated cost of around ₹4,700 crore, the Central Government gave its approval in 2016. 2,700 acres of land has been acquired for the development. The project, which was initially scheduled to be completed in 2023, was delayed during the YSRCP government. The work has picked up pace since the TDP government came to power again. Now, six months ahead of the December 2026 deadline, officials have confirmed that it will start in June.

The state government has named this airport after freedom fighter Alluri Seetharama Raju to honor his inspiring services. An assembly resolution was passed for this in November 2024. This airport is being built with international standards and modern facilities. Once completed, it will become the main gateway to Uttarandhra and Godavari districts. This project, which has been a long-awaited wish of the people, is now about to be fulfilled. It will stand as an international level transportation hub for future generations.
