Megastar's 'Punnaminagu' celebrates 45 years
The film that laid a strong foundation for Megastar Chiranjeevi's career was 'Punnaminagu'. Directed by Rajasekhar, the film starred Chiranjeevi, Narasimha Raju, Rati Agnihotri, Ramadasu, Padmanabham and Menaka in key roles. The film, which was released on June 13, 1980, has completed 45 years today. Rajasekhar is the director of this movie, which is a remake of the superhit Kannada film 'Hunnimiye Ratthiyalu'. Chakravarthy's captivating music and the excellent performances of Chiranjeevi, Narasimha Raju and Rati Agnihotri mesmerized the audience.
The role of Nagulu played by Chiranjeevi in 'Punnaminagu' was a rare challenge. As a fresh talent from the Film Institute, Chiranjeevi did not have much experience in the industry till then. However, playing a complex character with snake-like features is not an easy task. But, Chiranjeevi, with his acting talent, completely immersed himself in the role of Nagulu and brought the character to life. His dialogue delivery and energetic dance moments enthralled the youth. Chiranjeevi's natural acting and his screen presence captivated the audience.
Chiranjeevi's performance is especially unique in the climax of the film. After Nagulu is known to be a person with snake-like features, hero Narasimharaju asks him to run away. In that scene, Chiranjeevi's dialogue "Where should I go... If I go, I will go to my birthplace..." touched the hearts of the audience and created an emotional impact that brought tears to their eyes. So.. 'Punnaminagu' is credited with being a turning point in Chiranjeevi's career and leading him towards stardom.
