Hit in Telugu.. Flop in Tamil!
Directed by Sekhar Kammula, the pan-India movie ‘Kubera’ starring Dhanush and Nagarjuna is doing well in the Telugu states. It has collected Rs 100 crore gross within a week of its release and is still running housefull shows in theaters. Even though it is in competition with multi-starrer movies like ‘Kannappa’, it is getting a strong response from the Telugu audience.
However, at the same time, this movie is failing in Tamil Nadu. According to Kollywood trade information, the total collections in Tamil Nadu are less than Rs 20 crore. It must be said that this is not at the expected level for Dhanush’s movie. Analysts say the main reason for this difference is the mindset of the Tamil audience.
Although Dhanush starred in the movie.. Since the movie came out with a Telugu director and a Telugu technical team, the Tamil people considered it a dubbed movie. In Tamil, regionalism is more important. Also, Sekhar Kammula’s storytelling style did not connect well with the Tamil audience. The Tamil fans did not like the reduction of heroism in the character of Deva and giving equal importance to Nagarjuna.
On the other hand, the Telugu audience, regardless of language or region, gave priority to the film. In the past, there have been many instances where Tamil dubbed films have become super hits in Telugu. With ‘Kubera’, the brand mind nature of the Telugu audience was once again clearly visible.
