‘Coolie’ Sensational Collections
Tamil superstar Rajinikanth and director Lokesh Kanagaraj's 'Coolie' was released worldwide yesterday. The film, which had a huge collection in the form of premieres before its release, collected 3.04 million dollars in North America. This is an all-time record for Tamil films. Despite the competition from 'War 2' in Telugu states, it is on track to achieve double-digit share openings in limited theaters.
According to trade sources, the production cost of 'Coolie' is Rs.350 crore. Asian Suresh acquired the theatrical rights of Telugu states for Rs.54 crore. The Telugu version needs a share of Rs.55 crore (Rs.110 crore gross) to break even. Tamil Nadu rights were sold for Rs.100 crore, Kerala-Karnataka for Rs.20 crore, North India for Rs.50 crore, and overseas for Rs.85 crore. The total worldwide pre-release business is around Rs.310 crores, break-even target is Rs.624 crores gross.
As for the first day collections, it is likely to earn Rs.40 crores in Tamil, Rs.30 crores in Telugu, Rs.30 crores in Karnataka-Kerala-Rest of India, and Rs.40 crores in Overseas, for a total opening of between Rs.140-160 crores. Trade talk says that the film, which collected Rs.85 crores through advance bookings alone, is likely to enter the 100 crore club on the first day.
